In the heart of Lichfield, The Lichfield Garrick Theatre stands as a cultural landmark. Tasked with revitalising its public spaces, Designs Unlimited, in collaboration with a skilled team of architects and consultants, reimagined the theatre’s interiors to create a welcoming and inclusive environment, ensuring a blend of functionality and theatrical charm.

Challenge
The theatre’s public spaces, including two bars, two foyer bars, the box office, and all circulation areas, needed a complete refresh. With a loyal audience and the aim to attract non-theatre visitors, the refurbishment had to align with the theatre’s branding while creating a more inviting environment.
A major challenge was the existing air circulation system, which featured large ventilation ducts and open flooring cut-outs. These restricted usable space and created disjointed areas that were underutilised. Additionally, the project required close coordination between consultants due to necessary structural changes, all while keeping to a strict schedule to avoid disrupting theatre productions.
Solution
Architects and M&E designers reworked the air circulation system, allowing previously enclosed areas to become functional seating spaces. This created a more comfortable, cohesive layout, improving both circulation and usability.
Following brand guidelines, we designed a refreshed and a welcoming interior, repositioning bars to provide a variety of seating options, including both open and enclosed areas. Fixtures and fittings, such as new bars, banquette seating, lighting gantries, and a redesigned box office, were carefully planned and implemented.
Accessibility and inclusivity were prioritised, with extended WC facilities, including gender-neutral and accessible options. Detailed drawings and specifications ensured a smooth construction process, allowing the project to remain on schedule and within budget.
Outcome

The refurbishment has been a great success, receiving highly positive feedback from visitors and theatre-goers. The redesigned spaces have significantly improved the customer experience, offering inviting and comfortable areas for relaxation and socialising. The project manager highlighted the importance of the detailed specifications provided by Designs Unlimited, which ensured a smooth and efficient process from concept to completion.
